Was there any obsession, fixed idea, or image that guided the album’s creative process, even if it isn’t immediately apparent to the listener?
I would say that was more so revealed through the process of making it. Something blue came up early, and then I tried my best to figure out what that was.

What was the process of deciding which songs would and wouldn’t be part of the album?
I had more than what ended up on there for sure, but the ones that stick usually feel a bit more rounded. Like they have less holes and a full body. I was also trying to balance distinctiveness with moments that could flow together.

What changed in the way of writing, recording, or producing on this album compared to previous recordings?
Nothing much in the writing process. I think every song started from guitar, and in a way I think I’ve always dreamed of making something this intimate that unfolds from a starting point that pure. So I leaned in. There are a lot more live takes and first takes compared to other recordings. I also played all the instruments except for what’s on track 8.

Were there any songs that were particularly difficult to finish or let go of? Why?
Yes. I think the ones that were difficult had more to do with the emotional baggage and less to do with anything technical.

What role did intuition and error play during the process?
Everything.

Was the order of the songs intended as a narrative? How was the order decided?
Yes, I’d say. It felt mostly about trying to decide where the holes in the story could be.

Which composers, musicians, bands, producers, and studios would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Everyone all at once!
