Fast and painless

Bart Kuykens

What pieces or projects have you been working on lately?
I am working on my latest photozine called MEIN12. This photozine is for every Porsche 912 enthusiast out there, but just as much for every other air-cooled aficionado who can appreciate the 912 for its minimalist DNA. It’s my 17th publication.

What did you learn (or unlearn) while working on it?
After 17 publications, I have developed a good workflow for myself, although every project is different, so you always learn new things. Not particularly with shooting techniques, but more about how to handle different people when you outsource a lot of stuff in the process.

What words, ideas or emotions were running through your head?
When I work on a project, I always want to feel excited and loved. Those basic emotions get me through the process and keep me going.

Were there any conversations, movies, music, or books that made their way into that work?
I take small pieces from everything into my work. It can be a conversation, a page in a book or a certain song, but nothing in particular.

What’s been the most difficult thing you’ve faced recently in your creative process?
Getting everybody behind my workflow, pace and dedication. Everybody has their own reasons why they commit to the project I am working on. And not everybody wants to get up at 6 a.m. and start mailing and calling. That’s always a difficult exercise.

What is your favorite coffee shop and why do you like going there?
Not a single one in particular. I travel a lot and have several I like depending on the location.

If your life were a movie this month, what would it be called and who would write the soundtrack?
FAST AND PAINLESS. And of course I’ll be the hero in my own movie! :-) The soundtrack will be written by the Rolling Stones.

Which studios, laboratories, or workshops have you collaborated with recently or would you like to collaborate with in the future?
I never work in a studio, always shoot with available light and 90% outside. For my film development, I work with MeinFilmLab in Germany.

Recommend one or more artists you follow who inspire you, and tell us what you like most about their work or their way of working.
I follow a lot of good artists and try to learn from all of them. Every week is different, and looking at other people’s work also depends on my mood and vibe. I hate routine, so I try to look at as much as possible.
