What habit has been sustaining you lately?
Smiling at strangers on the street has been sustaining me lately.
What time of day do you feel most like yourself?
Early mornings, especially at sunrise.
When recently did you feel out of place?
When I closely studied the artwork for the EP Kids Table from Bright Eyes. It gave me a strange sinking feeling, like I’ve already lived a lot.
What are you still holding onto even though you know you’ll eventually have to let go?
I hold on to whatever my mom gives me, like a card or something she thinks I might need. It keeps her present while we live far apart and lead busy lives.
What scares you more today: change or staying the same? Why?
Change. But it’s a good kind of fear.
Tell us about a recent experience that made you change your mind or stop believing in something.
Every time I hear that someone used to be vegan but gave up, I lose a bit more faith in humanity.
Recommend a movie, an album, and a book and tell us why you liked each one.
Album: Gris Klein from Birds in Row. It’s everything I could want from a perfect record. I will never get bored of it.
Book: Suicide by Édouard Levé. The author was a photographer and writer. The book is considered his suicide note, although this is never made explicit. He depicts the most mundane moments and fills them with deeper meaning—that’s the kind of art I love.
Movie: I’m not really a movie person, so my recommendations wouldn’t be very good. Maybe something French.
What is your favorite restaurant and what do you recommend we order?
My favorite restaurant is Hum Vegan Cuisine, in Berlin. I’d recommend the number 33.
Which friend have you admired lately, and why?
My friend Amy Haghebaert . She’s incredibly talented, smart, funny, and full of energy. Her concert photography is unique, and every photo she takes is full of storytelling. My favourite image is a self-portrait she took in the hospital. It’s been years since she took it, but it has never left my mind.
