Secrets

Goldroom

How was this song born: with an image, a phrase, a melody… or something else?
Gavrielle and I were writing songs one day, and as happens a lot in those situations, our hang turned into a bit of a therapy session. We were talking about the difficulties of being in relationships while also being artists, and Gavi brought up this song she was working on that was about just that. She sang some of it for me, and it made the hairs on my arms stand up straight. I knew we could make something amazing out of it, and so Secrets was born that day.

Who worked or collaborated on this song and how did they contribute to its creation?
After Gavi left, I ended up doing another session with my production partner Fabian, where we fleshed out the production on the song. The song is quite melancholic, but I was excited to give the song a hopeful feeling with the instrumentation. I’m a true escapist when it comes to music, and so anytime I can paint a vibe that allows people to leave their mental space and escape somewhere else, I feel like I’ve accomplished something. I always think about songs from those types of cinematic angles.

How long did it take to take its final form?
Years! The demo sat virtually unlisted through the end of COVID. When I was looking at putting a new record together last year, I was going through older demos and came across this one, and it just blew me away. For the life of me, I can’t understand what led me to shelve it a while back (bad advice maybe!), but hearing it with fresh ears immediately revealed to me how special the song was.

Is there any direct reference or influence (another song, book, movie) that is present in this song?
I’m not sure if this was true for Gavi, but for me I was touring a lot at the time, and the song became a lens to look at a relationship where the partners don’t see much of each other. I had been reading a lot about early yacht racing history, where many of the deliveries of the boats took place on longer ocean voyages, and it just had me thinking about being away from loved ones for prolonged periods. “Would you love me anyway?” feels so full of sadness and hope at the same time the way Gavi sings it, and I just think about those sailors far out at sea wondering the same thing.

What other songs or projects are coming up next?
I’m right in the middle of an album rollout! There are at least five more singles to come over the next handful of months, and hopefully at the end you’ll hear a complete album to go along with them. I’m back and will be touring again soon as well, which I’m really excited about!

Which composers, musicians, bands, producers, and studios would you like to collaborate with in the future?
So many, but honestly I’m always on the hunt for someone I haven’t discovered yet. That’s the dream. But to answer your question, Alan Braxe or Fred Falke. Goldroom wouldn’t exist without the music they made.
