Doors that open never really close

What pieces or projects have you been working on lately?
I have several projects developing simultaneously. Some are deeply rooted in modern Sinaloan culture, as that's where I currently live. Photographic/video research topics include the masks and traditions of the Jews of the Yoreme culture; the Italika motorcycle culture as a sense of community and belonging for young people in Sinaloa; illegal horse racing, etc. And also the personal projects that are always necessary to expel emotions.

What did you learn (or unlearn) while working on them?
In my research projects on Sinaloa, I've learned that delving into one's origins is incredibly powerful. There's a very strong and natural rush of energy in exploring one's roots. You discover things you didn't know before, but at the same time, when you learn about them, they feel very familiar. You find answers to your psyche that you've been searching for for a long time; you understand a little about why you are the way you are. You know yourself through others, through your culture.

In emotional projects, I'm unlearning old habits. I know I want to do something more elaborate. I'm in that process of feeling, observing, and finding the most radical ways to transform emotions into something that goes beyond a photo accompanied by a text.

What words, ideas or emotions were going through your head?
In research projects: adventure, curiosity, disinhibition, connection, going deeper and deeper.

In emotional projects: overwhelming feelings that then turn into a brainstorming session of ways to get rid of the things you're carrying inside. I think when a human being feels weird things, they need to get them out, and then they get creative. At least that's how it works for me.

Were there any conversations, movies, music, or books that made their way into that work?
Of course, in the end any creation is a remix of everything consumed.

Books: Algunas cosas oscuras y peligrosas: el libro de la máscara y los enmascarados by Servando Rocha. The Creative Act by Rick Rubin. Biografía del silencio by Pablo d’Ors.

Films: La chica de la aguja by Magnus Von Horn. Aftersun by Charlotte Wells

Music: Ryuichi SakamotoHVOB, The BlazeFred again..

Prayer: Serenity Prayer.

What's been the most difficult thing you've faced recently in your creative process?
The space between having ideas in mind and executing/materializing them.

What is your favorite restaurant and what do you recommend we order?
At the moment El Farallón (Los Mochis, Sinaloa). Order the sea bass sashimi and the Caribbean whitefish fillet.

If your life were a movie this month, what would it be called and who would write the soundtrack?
Title: Doors that open never really close. Soundtrack by Fred again..

Recommend us an artist you follow who inspires you, and tell us what you like most about their work or their way of working.
Cristina de Middel (current president of Magnum Photos), I admire her playful approach to documentary photography. It breaks the pattern of using photography as a tool tied to truth and gives it a new approach that asks questions rather than answers.
