How did this place come about and what made it different from the start?
<\/strong>My wife and business partner, Miri<\/strong><\/a>, and I were living a fast-paced version of life in New York and then London. Somewhere in all of that, we both felt the same thing: the absence of something real and purposeful. Calienna started as an answer to that feeling rather than a business plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We wanted to build a place where plants, design, books, and a great caf\u00e9 could exist together, not just as a concept but as a genuine daily experience. What made it different from the start was that we never thought of it as strictly a plant store. We wanted to build our own world and live and work in it. That seems to have resonated with many people, so it made an impact right from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s worth noting that we opened in September 2020, just one month before the first lockdown in Vienna. Then came the subsequent lockdowns. Whenever we were open, the business thrived because people needed plants for their apartments. During the lockdowns, we had to be very creative to keep things going, from online plant drops to a QR-coded shopping window. Those first years made us very resilient and left us with the mentality that we can get through anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What part of the day, space, or creative process do those who work here enjoy the most?
<\/strong>The first hour of the morning before the doors open. The store is calm, music is playing, the plants are just sitting there doing their thing, someone is making the first coffee, and for a moment it feels less like a business and more like the thing we always wanted it to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something about a space full of living things, the slight humidity in the air, and the calmness and clarity before the day really gets going. It’s peaceful and grounding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone is coming in for the first time, what should they not miss?
<\/strong>I would say: slow down. That sounds obvious, but many people walk in with their phones already out. The ones who put them away for ten minutes are the ones who actually feel the place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond that, order something from the caf\u00e9, pick up a plant whose name you don’t know and ask about it, spend a few minutes with the books, or read upstairs. The store rewards unrushed attention in a way that a quick loop never can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has been an interesting challenge that has made you rethink something about the project?
<\/strong>Running too many things beautifully at the same time is much harder than it sounds. Miri and I built Calienna with an enormous amount of love and very little operational experience. For a long time, that felt like a strength, and in many ways it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there came a point where we had to be honest about the difference between a curated world and a structured business. Holding both simultaneously, the soul and the system, is the ongoing challenge. We are always working on it. We probably always will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What influence, idea, or reference continues to shape the way you work today?
<\/strong>Grow Every Day.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not as a tagline, but as a genuine daily question we ask ourselves and the business constantly. Are we growing? Are the plants growing? Is the team growing? Is our thinking becoming sharper?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sounds deceptively simple, and it is. But simple ideas are often the hardest ones to live by, especially when you’re also trying to run a caf\u00e9, manage a team, design spaces for clients, and remember to water everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What it really means in practice is a refusal to settle. Not in a relentless hustle sense, but in the way a plant grows: quietly, consistently, always toward the light, even when nobody is watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have found that the days we ignore that question are always the days something feels slightly off. The days we ask it honestly, even when the answer is uncomfortable, are the days something moves forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also shapes how we think about the people who come through our doors. Everyone who walks in is facing some version of that question themselves, whether they know it or not. They are looking for something that helps them feel more alive, more connected, more themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That responsibility keeps us honest about what we put into the space, what we sell, what we say, and how we treat people. Growth is not just our philosophy. It’s our standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What place, project, or person has inspired you recently and why?
<\/strong>We recently returned from visiting my family in Laguna Beach, California. Orange County has changed radically since I moved away in 2000, and it is always somewhat heartbreaking to see how superficial much of it has become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Laguna and the towns south of it have somehow managed to retain something more honest, more grounded, and more faithful to the Southern California spirit I grew up with. Spending time there reminded me of where I came from and why I loved it so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calienna is a combination of California and Vienna, both in name and in spirit. After nearly six years of running a business, it’s easy to get caught up in the weeds. Returning to the place that inspired a large part of what we built, and reconnecting with that energy, was not just inspiring. It was necessary. Every business and every brand needs that kind of recalibration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your space could invite someone to collaborate for a day, who would it be and what would you do together?
<\/strong>Honestly, there are a number of people: Tyler Hays of BDDW<\/strong><\/a>, Kyle Ng<\/strong><\/a> of Brain Dead<\/strong><\/a>, Jean Touitou of A.P.C<\/strong><\/a>., and Sarah Andelman<\/strong><\/a> of Colette<\/strong><\/a>, who has been a generous and ongoing advisor in how we think about what Calienna is and what it could become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the California kid in me dreams of meeting Shawn St\u00fcssy<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What he created is one of the great examples of someone following their own taste so completely and consistently that the world eventually caught up. He wasn’t trying to build a global cultural phenomenon. He was making surfboards and printing his signature on T-shirts in Laguna Beach, close to where I grew up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a subconscious level, his work influenced me to study design and eventually work in the creative industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A collaboration would be incredible. But I would be just as happy sitting down with him at Calienna over a coffee and talking honestly about what it means to build something you genuinely believe in, how you grow without losing sight of why you started, and how you stay true to yourself when the world pulls you in other directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there an object, corner, or detail of the place that has a story that few people know?
<\/strong>There are a handful of details I got particularly nerdy about, but the biggest example is the giant sun hanging above our garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People notice it immediately, but most don’t know the deeper intention behind it. The obvious layer is a direct nod to California, where part of this brand comes from. Positioned above the garden, it symbolically feeds everything growing beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the deeper layer lies in the symbol itself. The sun is one of the oldest marks in human history. From cave paintings to hieroglyphics, from Aztec and Mayan cosmology to the great painters of the Renaissance, every culture has used it to express the same ideas: life, energy, growth, the force that makes everything else possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Calienna logo is built on those same principles: sacred geometry, a face at the centre, and the words\u00a0Grow Every Day<\/em> surrounding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this project were a city, a book, or a record, which would it be and why?
<\/strong>A record, for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, something that sounds like it was made by people who had no interest in what was commercially convenient at the time, people who simply followed the thing they heard in their heads until it existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kind of record that sounds better with every listen, where you keep noticing details you missed before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’d like Calienna to be that kind of place: somewhere that reveals itself slowly and rewards the people who keep coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
