What pieces or projects have you been working on lately?<\/strong>
I\u2019m an office drone who lives stuck between the office, the car, and the house\u2014and I\u2019d include Tijuana in that too: a small city with more than two million inhabitants. There\u2019s no space to breathe. I\u2019m desperate to get out into open spaces, to feel small before the depth of the horizon and lose myself in the vastness of a starry sky that the smog<\/em> won\u2019t let me see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year I\u2019ll travel across the Baja California Peninsula, from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas. More than a vacation, this is the first somewhat serious project I\u2019ve done since university. I want to photograph the desert landscape, the Sea of Cortez, the missions, the cave paintings, the luxury of Cabo, and\u2014if I\u2019m lucky\u2014whales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But mainly, I want to photograph Santa Rosal\u00eda, a town in Baja California Sur founded by the French in the late 1800s. The whole area has French architecture that contrasts with the rest of the towns across the peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

What did you learn (or unlearn) while working on them?<\/strong>
They say \u201cthe destination is the journey,\u201d and I feel like the lesson from all this hasn\u2019t arrived yet; it\u2019s out there somewhere along the more than 3,000 kilometers of the trip. The story is still being written\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What words, ideas or emotions were going through your head?<\/strong>
Adventure and curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Were there any conversations, movies, music, or books that made their way into that work?<\/strong>
Without a doubt, the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. I identify with the main character since I work at a company that creates viral content. I won\u2019t say the name\u2014let\u2019s just say that a few years ago we used to expose people\u2019s infidelities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my free time, I spend hours on Maps clicking random locations to \u201cexplore.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What's been the most difficult thing you've faced recently in your creative process?<\/strong>
The factors of time<\/em> (I\u2019m an overworked office drone) and money<\/em> (I shoot film photography). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your favorite restaurant and what do you recommend we order?<\/strong>
I love Big Boy<\/a><\/strong> in Tijuana. I\u2019m not sure, but I think it isn\u2019t part of the American burger chain with the same name. It\u2019s one of the very few authentic places that has survived gentrification in Tijuana\u2014it still has the same d\u00e9cor from the 1970s. In fact, Professor Jirafales did a funny commercial for it in the \u201990s\u2014you can find it on Youtube<\/a><\/strong>. The place hasn\u2019t changed at all. It\u2019s been a while since I last went, but the last thing I ordered was the Fried Chicken Basket, although the classic choice is their burgers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your life were a movie this month, what would it be called and who would write the soundtrack?<\/strong>
This month has been emotionally tough, and I\u2019m finally starting to realize some things I had put off dealing with out of immaturity. I\u2019d simply call it January<\/em>. Titles aren\u2019t really my thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The soundtrack would be made by my homies: the nostalgic one, Grand Bantam<\/a><\/strong>, and the wild one, Lil Payin<\/a><\/strong>\u2014just so they\u2019ll finally start working together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recommend one or more artists you follow who inspire you, and tell us what you like most about their work or their way of working.<\/strong>
Honestly, I\u2019m a fan of my homies: Carlos Casillas<\/a> <\/strong>and Edwin Segura<\/a><\/strong>. They\u2019re two of my favorite photographers from Tijuana. Going out to shoot photos with them has helped me see street photography from a more human and honest perspective. Watching how they interact with people and naturally become part of the environment inspires me a lot\u2014both professionally and personally.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
