What did you learn (or unlearn) while working on them?
Whenever I work on a new exhibition, I learn a lot about how to analyze and view my own work, and I just exhibited some pieces that speak of nostalgia, that feeling we have when we see a photograph, and the feeling of wanting to return to that place or that moment. 

What words, ideas or emotions were going through your head?
Nostalgia, longing, remembrance, the past, time and memory.

Were there any conversations, movies, music, or books that made their way into that work?
Yes, many, but what was most present was the book Pedro Páramo that I have been rereading, the film “Shadows in Paradise” by Aki Kaurismäki, and the song “Let It Roll (Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp)” by George Harrison.

What's been the most difficult thing you've faced recently in your creative process?
Organize my ideas.

What is your favorite restaurant and what do you recommend we order?
I love going to Mi Compa Chava, it's the best place, order the Cocomil cocktail, highly recommended. 

If your life were a movie this month, what would it be called and who would write the soundtrack?
It would be called “Do you believe in destiny?”, and I don't know how, but I feel that the soundtrack would be a mix of Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Mamas & the Papas and Natanael Cano.

Recommend one or more artists you follow who inspire you, and tell us what you like most about their work or their way of working.
I've been watching a lot of films lately. I'm following Wong Kar-wai's work; I'm captivated by the atmospheres he creates and the way he tells his stories. I really like Aki Kaurismäki's handling of his characters, his cinematography, and especially how he portrays life in Northern Europe in the 1980s and 90s. And Sofia Coppola's aesthetic is always unmistakable, and I love her focus on her characters.

Everyone has a unique style, can you describe how you would define your style and what visual or conceptual elements characterize it?
Diría que más que un estilo, mi trabajo explora el pasado, la nostalgia y mi percepción del espacio y el tiempo. Me gusta mucho experimentar con distintos formatos. A veces registro una misma escena o secuencia en varios respaldos (35mm, pinhole, super 8, película de 120), y después poco a poco voy juntando y comunicando las imágenes.

Photography has the power to tell stories and convey emotions. Can you share an experience where one of your photographs has had a significant impact on people or yourself?
En mi proyecto Circus, estoy tomando fotos de las carpas circenses que hay en el Estado de México, mi interés es mostrar ese mundo itinerante, su atemporalidad, y la búsqueda permanente de lo que pueda ser novedoso para el público.

En 2022 expuse junto con otras fotos algunas piezas de este proyecto en la galería Anomalía, y me pareció muy peculiar que mucha gente se acercó a mí para preguntarme en dónde estaba haciendo las fotos, cuál era mi relación con los circos y si eran fotos de archivo o actuales, también me mandaron fotos de otros circos en el mundo.

Me gusta pensar que cuando la gente ve mis fotos les recuerda algo o alguien y se llevan esa memoria.

What has been your most challenging photography project to date and why?
Hace poco hice la foto fija de un comercial en análogo y digital, fue un gran reto poder estar en set intentando hacer tomas con mis cámaras en muy poco tiempo.

Technology and photo editing tools are constantly evolving, can you tell us about the techniques and equipment you consider essential to your work?
Me encanta que existan tantas herramientas para crear imágenes, yo usualmente cargo muchas cosas y edito poco en post, casi siempre traigo mi celular, una cámara digital, una de 35mm, una de super 8, y una de medio formato, y lentes fijos.

There are many genres in photography, from portraits to nature photography. Do you have a favorite genre that you are most comfortable with or enjoy shooting? Why?
Generalmente lo que más hago es foto documental, de retrato, lifestyle y viajes, para mi es importante contar historias con mis imágenes y conectar con las personas a través de ellas, me inspira mucho conocer nuevos lugares, explorar y tomar fotos o filmar todo lo que pueda.

Can you share an interesting or unusual anecdote you experienced while taking photographs?
Para mí es muy interesante cuando saco alguna de mis cámaras y a las personas alrededor les llama la atención verme utilizando cámaras de rollo, me han preguntado si aún funcionan, dónde las consigo, si existen rollos y en dónde los revelo, y por qué uso cámaras antiguas en lugar de digitales, o de repente me cuentan que también alguien les heredó alguna cámara parecida o recuerdan alguna que hubo en su familia.

Many photographers find inspiration in other visual artists or in everyday life. What are some of your sources of inspiration?
Definitivamente mi inspiración número uno es la CDMX, me emociona que siempre están pasando muchas cosas, que nunca termino de conocerla, de recorrerla, y que nunca termina de sorprenderme. También veo muchas pelis y las repito varias varias veces, igual me gusta mucho leer e imaginarme cómo contaría yo esas historias con fotos.

Photography is a visual medium, but it often has a conceptual background as well. Have you worked on photographic projects that address specific themes or concepts? Can you share information about one of those projects?
Sí, mi proyecto “One day you’ll be just a memory”, va sobre autorretratos hechos con una cámara pinhole en blanco y negro, directo en el papel. El concepto es la memoria y la certeza de que todo es efímero, y al mismo tiempo habla de la añoranza y el dolor de algo que hemos perdido.

What inspires you when creating new images? Do you have any rituals or creative processes that you follow to find inspiration?
Mi inspiración viene de muchas cosas: de sueños, de recuerdos, de películas, de la música, de libros. Cuando no tengo mucho tiempo trato de recordar pelis, canciones o libros que me gustaron y si tengo más tiempo, intento leer y ver mucho cine. La verdad no tengo ningún ritual creativo, tal vez debería, lo que sí, casi siempre cargo con mi cámara.

For aspiring photographers who may be reading this interview, what is the most valuable piece of advice you have received in your career or would like to share with them?
Ser súper perseverantes, confiar mucho en tu red de amigues o aliades justamente cuando buscas alguna opinión o consejo sobre tus proyectos, escuchar, ver, analizar y hacer comunidad siempre.
